Dr. Alice H. Young Youth Triumph Award

The Gamma Iota Boule Foundation Youth Triumph Award is named in the honor of Dr. Alice Holloway Young. Dr. Young was a true trailblazer for the advancement of young people. She chose education as her primary tool to enable them to succeed. She was exemplary in the field of education as a student, teacher, administrator, and leader in the community for more than 50 years.

Dr. Young received her Bachelor of Science degree from Bennett College, Greensboro North Carolina and Masters and Doctoral degrees in Education Supervision and Administration from the University of Rochester.

Dr. Young, a consummate trailblazer, joined the Rochester City School District in 1952 as one of the District’s first African American Classroom teachers. She was the only African American reading specialist in the District in 1956. She was the District’s first African American Vice-Principal and Principal of elementary schools; the first Title 1 director (programs for educationally and economically deprived children); and the first central office administrator (Supervising Director of all elementary schools). Dr. Young wrote and supervised the District’s first integration programs including the Urban Suburban Program which is still in existence today.

In 1961, Dr. Alice Holloway Young became a founding trustee of Monroe Community College. She served as Chair of the board from 1978 to 1998. Her leadership, dedication and perseverance significantly contributed to the advancement of literally thousands of individuals who have attended MCC.

Dr. Young was the recipient of many awards and has been recognized in numerous ways. In 2021 the Rochester City School District renamed the Nathaniel Rochester School Number 3 to the Dr. Alice Holloway Young School Number 3. Also, there is a long list of organizations and programs for which she provided effective guidance and leadership over the years.

Dr. Young died on April 17, 2024 at the age of 100 years. She was truly a role model. Her Legacy is enormous and very much appreciated.
